Take a romantic break in Plockton

If there ever was a place that summed up the beauty of Western Scotland, It is Plockton. 85 miles from Inverness, and just 9 miles from the Isle of Skye, this village is nestled high up, next to Loch Carron and Loch Alsh. They call it a village, but it is not one, as we know it. With a single road, running down to the harbour from the local high school it is a small place. That is just one of the attractions.

The mountains overlook the palm trees in this idyllic location. If you want to eat, go no further than the Plockton Inn, opposite the Primary School. It serves fresh fish caught from the bay, over 20 different types of whisky and live Scottish music plays every Thursday; almost a Scottish village cliché. But the music’s good, food brilliant whisky amazing and the welcome warm, all you want on a cold windy night, and it certainly gets a lot of windy days up there.

Wildlife and breathtaking scenery

In Plockton village, you will meet a friendly face and a variety of wildlife going up the main road, sheep, cattle, a dog, or two and do not be surprised if you do not see something a little more exotic such as seals, buzzards or even the odd Golden Eagle. If you are going self catering, you will need to drive to the Kyle of Lochalsh, some 7 miles away. Now, this isn’t a normal 7 miles, it’s a highlands 7 miles, through a single-track road up and down some breathtaking scenery.

Do not expect Waitrose or Whole Foods though, all you will get is a Co-Op, but it certainly does the job. If Plockton does not float your boat, and you want to see even more landscape, reminiscent of a different planet, then head over the Skye Bridge and travel north – the mountains are even more amazing, and life is even sparser.
