Travel shortcut guide to Miami

I have to admit I have a Miami vice. From a generation that was first introduced to the city by Michael Mann in the 80s, my first visit revealed that the city has not changed much in the last thirty years. While South Beach (SoBe) has all of the Art Deco charm it always did, if you venture into downtown Miami it is a different story altogether. The city has, essentially, been left to deteriorate since Crockett and Tubbs raced through its streets in a Ferrari.

Hotel recommendations

You can find good quality, reasonably priced hotels in South Beach; like the Kent and the Penguin, as well as those frequented by the rich and famous. The Raleigh and The Shore Club are perfect if your budget is not suffering because of the credit crunch. A new hotel on the block, actually a newly refurbished version of an Ocean Drive classic, is the Clevelander. If you are looking for a classic Miami pool party, I am told it is the place to go. If you are after a club, SoBe is the place to go; whether it is Mango’s, Mynt, Mansion, or Twist. There is something for everyone.

Taste the Cuban life

Off the beaten track, I would recommend a trip to Little Havana. Close your eyes and you could be 90 miles off the Florida coast, the domino clubs, the cigar manufacturers, and the coffee. The café Cubana is an experience to behold but it is worth getting local advice on where to get the cigars from, the quality does vary. If you are after a dining experience with a difference, the 11th Street Diner is worth a visit. It is an old streamliner trailer and the food is both good quality and good value.
