Pound friendly destinations – Costa Rica

Pound friendly destinations - Costa Rica

In this series, we explore five destinations world-wide where Brits can get a lot for their money. The pound has suffered a drastic drop in recent months against major currencies and many holidaymakers find themselves with fewer and fewer affordable options, a real problem in the current economic situation. Today’s destination is a Latin American gem: the beautiful destination of Costa Rica

Currency Explained

Although pricing in Costa Rica is often in US Dollars, the main currency is the colon; one pound currently trades at a little over 800 colones. To put things into perspective: a pint of beer can be had for 520 colones; a main course at an upmarket restaurant will cost 5,200 colones. That is pretty incredible value.

Safe and Friendly

Costa Rica does not have a history of terrorism or any significant problems with violence. The worst a tourist can expect is pick pocketing or theft, especially from cars. That’s not to say nothing can happen; visitors should be aware of their belongings and surroundings as one would in any foreign destination. It is also comforting to note that local healthcare is of high standard and the water is drinkable.

The country is also a friendly destination, especially for families with children. There are a number of resorts and tours aimed at keeping both the adults and kids happy. With loads of green space to be explored, the views never stop; the local wildlife can also be entertaining.

A Biological and Ecological Paradise

National Geographic has described Costa Rica as the “”the most biologically intense place on Earth”, with 6% of the entire planet’s flora and fauna within only 0.01% of the Earth’s surface. There are 1,400 species of orchids, 800 species of ferns, 1,200 species of butterflies, 74 frog species, and 894 bird species. For those interested in exploring each corner of the small nation (only double the size of Wales), one can find active volcanoes, rainforests, mountains, and beaches.

Costa Rica has been often in the news for its efforts to offer green and sustainable tourism. Environmental regulations have imposed strict conditions on operators; these efforts have contributed to maintaining the country’s biodiversity, and tourists will find plenty of options for tours and accommodation that are both sustainable and socially responsible.

If You Go

Travel to San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital and international gateway city, requires connections via the United States or Europe. As it is close to the equator, the country has a relatively temperate climate year-round and has only two seasons; the green season, characterised by more rain fall, runs from May to November. The dry season runs from December to April and this is makes for the ideal time to visit.
