Five must see tourist attractions in Prague

Out of all of the European cities I have visited over the years, Prague is one of my favourites. Flying direct from the UK to Prague’s Ruzyne airport, we were picked up at the airport by an airport transport service and taken to the Botel Albatros, which is a boat hotel located on the Vltava river. The hotel is only 10 minutes walk from Old Town Square and the tram system, which takes you around this romantic and beautiful city.

Five tourist attractions stood out for me during my short trip.

Old Town Square

As I walked into the old town square for the first time I was speechless, the architecture and shear size of the Church of our Lady before Tyn took my breath away. In the centre of the Old Town Square is the Jan Hus statue, and just around the corner is the Hall Tower & Astronomical Clock. Take some time to relax, sit and have a mulled wine and take in the atmosphere at one of the many pavement cafes overlooking the square.

Charles Bridge

One of Prague’s most romantic sights, a stroll on Charles Bridge, with its stunning views of Prague Castle and the Vltava River. The first thing you approach is the Old Town Bridge Tower, a gothic tower. Make sure you climb the 138 steps to take some stunning photographs with a bird’s-eye view over Charles Bridge and the Old Town.

At the end of the bridge is the Mala Strana Bridge Tower, this is the entry point to Mala Strana, an ancient part of Prague with boutique shops, hotels, restaurants and bars. As you pass through the tower, look up and you will see Prague castle breathing down on you.

Prague Castle

Prague Castle is the largest medieval centre in Europe. It consists of Saint Vitus Cathedral. Museums and art galleries, a monastery, Golden Lane and St. George’s Basilica, plus numerous palaces. You will need to purchase a combined ticket to tour around the whole of Prague Castle, including entrance to Golden Lane, a street, with the smallest houses you will have ever seen. We made sure that we had a full day to see as much of the castle as we could, and try and find some time for the Changing of the Guard at the front gates, which takes place every hour.

Wenceslas Square

Wenceslas Square is Prague’s main street and the centre for shops, bars, casinos, and hotels. It is an extremely popular place for travellers to stay, as most of the cities sights and attractions are within easy walking distance. At the top of Wenceslas Square is the statue of St. Wenceslas on his horse, the building behind the statue is the National Museum.

Prague Zoo

There is so much to see in the historic areas of Prague that we nearly forgot about visiting Prague Zoo. It is only a few kilometres outside the city centre, and is easy to get to by public transport. Animals range from penguins, lions, tigers, and elephants. The animals are held in mountain enclosures with spectacular views of the river valley and green meadows.
