Enjoying a budget trip to London

Enjoying a budget trip to London

What better way to see what London has to offer than by walking around the city on foot– it is healthy but more important, for the budget traveller it doesn’t cost you a penny to get around. Most of the popular tourist attractions are within a short walk of each other, and whilst public transport is fairly reliable I couldn’t think of anything worse than sat on a tube, staring at the London underground map, hoping not to make eye contact with a fellow passenger.

See London for free

Who would have thought that one of the Europe’s most expensive cities actually provides free tourist attractions – it’s hard to believe, but access to the likes of the National Gallery, Imperial War and the British Museums are free. Check tourist attraction’s for opening and closing times because during the winter months, school and bank holidays the opening times will differ.

During the summer you will find a number of free music concerts along the river Thames and the best way to find out about the events is to pick up a free copy of London Life and Metro newspapers, which are distributed in the streets and on the London underground.

The Royals in London

A popular free attraction worth visiting with kids is the Princess Diana playground located in Kensington Gardens, and features a huge wooden pirate ship, a trail with teepees, beach around the pirate ship and various toys and play sculptures; all set amongst trees and plants.

Nearby is the Princess Diana memorial fountain which is made up of 545 pieces of granite, and the design aims to reflect Diana’s life, water flows from the highest point in two directions as it cascades. Both attractions are very popular in the Spring and Summer. You cannot visit London without visiting Buckingham Palace and watch the changing of guard parade which takes place daily May to July, at 11.30 am, and on alternate dates throughout the rest of the year.
