Cultural budget holidays to Thailand

Cultural budget holidays to Thailand

Today’s destination is Asia’s home to temples and beaches, Thailand. From pristine islands where movies have been filmed, to luxury waterside resorts, to cheap and cheerful (but still stunning) hotspots, the beach scene in Thailand is thriving. With so many islands and beaches, it is easy to find a bargain – just be sure that finding that remote, discount getaway isn’t too difficult to reach or you’ll be eating into your savings.

Relax in a spa

Believe it or not, Thailand is the world’s second-highest ranking spa destination. Remotely located spas can be expensive, but facilities in the larger cities such as Phuket, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or Pattaya are better value for money and up to high standard – but check the reviews or ask for a recommendation before making a booking.

Along similar lines, there is a precedent for “medical tourism” – where tourists come to get medical services cheaper than they would find at home. One hospital in Bangkok sees over 1,000 foreign patients a day for treatments such as cosmetic surgery, dental surgeries, or orthopaedics.

Golfing trips to Thailand

If all the above wasn’t enough, Thailand is now called the ‘Golf Capital of Asia’, as over 400,000 foreign golfers visit the country annually. Memberships are not required to play at a course here and all the equipment required can be hired. Holiday packages, golf tours, and pre-designed golfing itineraries all await the avid fan.

Bargain shopping trips

Clothing and crafts are produced locally in Thailand and products like silk are a real bargain. Cities not only have the traditional day market but also night markets and weekend markets. The best part is that vendors expect buyers to haggle, and you must do it – the listed price generally includes a high mark-up.

With low labour costs and plenty of tourist demand, everything imaginable in Thailand is fairly affordable. You’ll have to search or use an agent to find the best flights, but accommodation is superfluous in supply and easy to find. Decide your budget and there is something to fit it – from the cheapest guest house to luxurious retreats.

Prices are somewhat higher in Bangkok or the major tourist islands, but safe and easy options can be had by simply exploring further afield. Shop around between operators, and get a travel guide for familiarising yourself with what the various islands and districts have to offer.
